COLORS AND TONES

Thai is a tonal language. The tone in which a word is pronounced can change its meaning completely. Because the correct application of the complex Tone rules is not easy. I have developed a "color-tone-model. " It only takes a few minutes to internalize the relation between color and sound. Start Movie A: It makes clear the importance of using the right pitch.

TRANSLITERATION/PHONETIK

A transliteration is a kind of translation from one alphabet to another. Using the color coding you are able to read and pronounce Thai words with the correct tone, without mastering the Thai script. Because of my multilingual website, it was not easy to choose an appropriate phonetics. I opted for the German alphabet. The transliteration used all the "Umlaute: ü,ä,ö ), in contrast to an English phonetic spelling, which often uses confusing character constructs in order to mark certain sounds. The example of the learning unit "numbers"shows how the interplay of color, sound and transliteration works.

WHERE TO START?

For most westerners, the Thai writing is a book with seven seals, and a real challenge. The online information about this topic is overwhelming and often confusing. Those who are able to understand these pages, they do not need them.
But do not despair. First the good news: The Thai script uses a simple arrangement of words, verbs do not change their forms, nouns have no gender or plural. There is no definite article. There are no possessive forms of nouns. We need no tenses, as we know it from most other languages. Many verbs are combinations of verbs. The less good news is: Whos goal it is to speak Thai with the right tone, without the help of any transliteration, he has to deal with the almost hundred characters for consonants, vowels, tone marks, special characters and the complex Ton Rules . This site offers all opportunities to reach this goal. Who wants to learn just some basic phrases and vocabulary, a number of Flash movies with many words offer a solid foundation. Here
Thai +7 would offer the the right start.
